About

Xpress Magazine is a student-run magazine from the Department of Journalism at San Francisco State University. Formerly known as Prism, the magazine was first published in December 1969 to the bold-letter statement on its Volume II cover: “What this campus needs is a good, cheap, interesting magazine. Here is one for free.” In October of 1999, the magazine was published for the first time under its new name, Xpress Magazine, with an issue entitled “Anger” — a visceral response to digital computers and online journalism.

Since its inception, this student-led magazine has plunged into the often challenging and controversial subjects, from abortion rights in 1969 to Burning Man in 1994 to the intricacies of social media in 2022. Currently, Xpress Magazine is advised by Laura Moorhead, a journalist for over 20 years who holds a Ph.D from Stanford’s Learning Sciences & Technology Design program.
