The Sound of Odd Numbers: Tommy Boys

The+Sound+of+Odd+Numbers%3A+Tommy+Boys
The first installment of a larger project
by Lorisa Salvatin

Although their music once consisted mostly of traditional, off-beat math rock licks, Tommy Boys have been incorporating this technical style to more pop punk melodies since 2012. Their sound caught the attention of independent records label, Other People, giving the San Francisco band the chance to tour around the U.S. this past November.

Members: Daren Hasenkamp (Guitar), Tyler Johnson (Drums), and Robbie Donovan (Bass/Vocals).

Label: Other People Records

Sounds like: Algernon Cadwallader, Snowing, Spraynard.

Random Facts:

  • Tyler posted an ad on Craigslist looking for a drummer and Daren replied, sparking the creation of Tommy Boys. They would later ask Robbie to play bass.
  • Tyler and Robbie are SF State alums.
  • They’re releasing their first full length LP on January 27th of this coming year.

Some bands/artists they like: Happy Diving, Fall of Troy, Tera Melos, Michael Jackson.

The Sound of Odd Numbers is math rock interpreted by local music enthusiast and freelance photographer, Lorisa Salvatin. While math rock has been influencing music since the early 80s, the project explores the different directions that three bay area-based musicians are taking in finding their unique sound.
